I’m a big advocate for books, writing, and independent bookstores (after all, I used to work in the children’s department of one)! Thus, I was very excited to learn that Russell was going to be the official event photographer for Southern California’s Independent Book Association’s (SCIBA) 2013 Author Feast.
And what an event it was!
The evening included a trade show and cocktails, where publishers could show off new titles, and booksellers could peek through advance reader copies and hardcovers! Book bags were handed out, like the snazzy “I read YA!” tote from the Scholastic booth.
The trade show was followed with an awards dinner and ceremony, where authors sat with booksellers for dinner and dessert. Halfway through the evening, the authors rotated tables so they could meet and greet more book lovers.
Keynote speaker Jeffery Deaver charmingly spoke about the struggles of getting his first book published. He ended his speech by thanking the reps and booksellers who’ve worked tirelessly to get his books into the hands of readers.
After dinner, SCIBA recognized achievement in writing and bookselling. Awards were given to Marisa Silver (Adult Fiction: Mary Coin), Christine Moore (Adult Non-Fiction: Little Flower: Recipes from the Cafe), Robert Landau (Glenn Goldman Art, Architecture and Photography Award: Rock n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip), Debra Ginsberg (T. Jefferson Parker Mystery Award: What the Heart Remembers), Tom McNeal (Young Adult Fiction: Far Far Away), Pseudonymous Bosch (Middle Grade Fiction: Write This Book), and Jon Klassen (Picture Book: The Dark).
Of course, the best part about any book event is getting your book signed by the author! The evening closed with a fabulous signing from over thirty authors and illustrators participating in the feast.
